De Kust. 4 augustus 1945. De zomer van de vrijheid / Birger Stichelbaut Wouter Gheyle – Amsterdam : Rubinstein Publishing Bv – Tijdsbeeld , 2021. – 264 p. : ill. ; 60 cm.
Aiutano a identificare i numerosi dettagli bellici nelle foto.
A COMPLETE PANORAMA OF THE BELGIAN COAST IN 50 LINEAR METRES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
800 VIEWPOINTS A UNIQUE LOOK AT THE ATLANTIC WALL AND COASTAL HERITAGE
To show every detail, a large-format book was chosen, presenting the images at 60 cm wide and 38 cm high (a double-page spread) — a truly impressive size. In this book, you will travel along the Belgian coast. And you will step back in time. To 4 August 1945, a sunny day in the first summer after the Second World War — the summer of freedom.
On that day, an American military aircraft took exceptionally sharp and detailed aerial photographs of the entire coastline, from Knokke to De Panne. This unique photographic series, an extraordinary historical document, was recently rediscovered in an American archive. You will discover it in this book.
It feels like being in the plane… You can see the seaside resorts and their visitors swimming and enjoying the sun, the beach, and the bathing cabins; the belt of dunes; the harbours; and the unspoiled, scenic hinterland. But you can also see the many traces and scars of the war that had just ended, including the famous German Atlantic Wall. And you can see the coastal buildings of that era, during the transition from elite tourism to mass tourism. This too makes the photographic series so unique.
BIRGER STICHELBAUT and WOUTER GHEYLE, archaeologists at Ghent University, discovered the film roll containing the photos in the U.S. National Archives in Maryland. They help identify the many wartime details in the images.
Co-author JEROEN CORNILLY does the same, but for coastal architecture. He wrote the 100-year history of coastal tourism specifically for this book.
